They say café hopping in Singapore is expensive and to a certain extent, there’s some truth to it. Second Storey Bar in Katong makes it easier for us to enjoy a cuppa or two with great food at decent prices.
Conveniently located, Second Storey Bar is a cosy hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the vibrant neighbourhood we’ve grown to love. Step into the bar and an expansive space greets you with high ceilings and large windows overlooking the street. The space has a designated area for children, so it’s family-friendly too.
Second Storey Bar has an extensive menu of Western dishes with an Asian twist, offering the standard fare of brunch eggs, salads, pastas, pizzas and burgers. What we particularly liked was way the two worlds of cuisines were infused, with items like Miso Eggs Full Breakfast, Soya Soba, Peking Duck Pizza and Cheesy Dog in a Blanket on the menu.
Let’s face it, Asians love their Peking Duck –and we were delightfully surprised to find it in a pizza! The pizza dough was soft and moist, and generously covered in slices of smoked duck, peking sauce and mozzarella. Each bite took us back to a Chinese restaurant during the Lunar New Year, and we found ourselves eating the pizza by rolling each slice as you’d do with the real dish itself. Old habits die hard, right?
The next dish we tried is an American classic: the Chicken & Savoury Waffle. While there are many who would argue that waffles are meant for desserts, we beg to differ. What was interesting about Second Storey Bar’s interpretation is the addition of bacon and onion IN the waffle batter itself, so each bite gives you crispy bits of bacon and the unique (and often disregarded) mix of sweet and savoury flavours.
Pro tip: Don’t take your time with the perfect Instagram shot and get to the waffles immediately to avoid the base from getting to soggy! #truestory #noregrets
While there isn’t a line of cake stands for dessert, the bar has a modest menu that covers most cravings and are most importantly, affordable. To combat the food coma, we chased away our sleepiness with an Affogato, that came with a shot of Kahlua. Yum.
For the lovers of all things chocolate we are happy to report that at $4.50 for a plate, the Belgian Chocolate Brownies are gooey, moist and rich. Why not give yourself a decadent treat after a long day of work?
If your TGIF vibes are strong, Second Storey Bar also stocks craft beers and ciders like Young’s Banana Bread & Double Chocolate Stout, Brother’s Toffee Apple and Wychwood’s Hogoblin.
With a quiet, cozy atmosphere and delicious (yet affordable) food, Second Storey Bar is the perfect urban oasis for after-work drinks, birthday parties, or even a weekend brunch with your friends.
