Who can go past a classic like the Italian Pizza Margherita? Silky mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and a crispy, tomato base – yum!
History of Pizza Margherita
There is a cool story behind this classic Italian pizza. After the unification of Italy, the wife of King Umberto I, Queen Margherita of Savoy took a trip to Naples in 1889. In honour of her arrival, chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi created a pizza to celebrate the unification of Italy. He wanted the pizza to represent the Italian flag, so he used tomato on the pizza dough for the colour red, mozzarella for the colour white and basil for the colour green. He also named the pizza after the Queen Margherita – which is how this pizza got its name.
How Pizza Margherita is made
This pizza is a favourite recipe for many at home, because not only does it taste so delicious, it is also easy to make and doesn’t require many ingredients. You can either buy a plain pizza base or make your own – we recommend making your own for extra tastiness!
If you are going to make your own base from scratch, you need bread flour, yeast, salt, and olive oil. For the sauce, you need tomato paste, basil, and garlic.
The topping requires mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, cherry tomatoes, and fresh basil. First, the base is made by combining the flour, yeast, and salt and stirring. It is then turned into a dough by pouring warm water and olive oil into the centre and kneaded.
Next is the sauce, which is made by combining the tomato paste, basil, and crushed garlic. The dough is then rolled out to make the base and baked in the oven. When the base is ready, it is topped with the cheese and tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil and put back into the oven to melt the cheese for a few minutes. The basil is sprinkled on top right before serving.
