Chaffles, which burst onto the keto scene a few months ago, are one of the best ways out there to eat well without having to worry about your weight. Below, we lay out what they are and why you should be trying them.
The latest and greatest keto trend
The latest major trend in the keto diet community, chaffles are waffles made of cheese and egg (cheese + waffle = chaffle). Sweeping onto the scene in August 2019, these delightful treats have become a feature in low-carb breakfasts across the world. And chaffles are delicious – if you get the right cheese and you cook them just right, they do really taste like waffles and, to add to the appeal, each chaffle has only 3g of carbohydrates, compared to 15g in a normal waffle.
Heat up that waffle maker!
Part of the chaffle’s appeal is its simplicity – they are no more difficult to make than a normal waffle. They are usually made in a waffle maker, although some places might make them in a griddle pan if they are feeling fancy. The mixture is just eggs and cheese whisked together (usually mozzarella or cheddar) with some baking soda. The process from then is just like with any other waffle – the mixture is put in the waffle maker and cooked for a few minutes until golden brown and crisp. Then straight to your plate!
A treat for every meal
Chaffles are very versatile, both in terms of how the recipe can be altered and what they can be served with. If you are wanting something savoury with a sweet edge, then you can use chaffles as sandwich bread – good fillings are ham & cheese (is double cheese ever wrong?), grilled cheese, or bacon and egg. Equally, if you want to go full millennial, avocado on toast is definitely an option here. When you’re looking for a more traditional American-style waffle breakfast, chaffles taste fantastic with syrup and bacon. And, if you go to the right places, they’ll be experimenting with the recipe itself, adding cocoa powder to make a chocolate waffle, or, if they’re looking for a breadier texture, adding a spoonful of almond flour to really fluff it up.
Get chaffling
For us, the joy of the chaffle is simple: they allow you to eat something that tastes just like a waffle, but has none of the bad stuff in it; to eat an American style waffle breakfast without worrying about your weight. Yes, they have a name that is not the most appealing, but do they make up for it with their delicious taste? Without a doubt.
