How to mix a Puerto Rican coquito like the mixologists in San Juan
It’s an easy matter to mix up a coquito just like genuine Puerto Rican bartenders, and this creamy, coconut eggnog is sure to be a real hit over Christmas. Just like American-style eggnogs, coquitos are a sweetened blend of alcohol and condensed milk. But, their secret coconut ingredient ensures their place in the annals of popular drinks for celebrations, particularly throughout the festive season. It’s said that the coquito recipe was taken to Puerto Rico by the Spanish conquistadors, and there are several similar drinks right across the Caribbean. This sweet alcoholic beverage is the perfect drink for rounding off any party or festive meal. Follow our simple recipe below to create superb coquitos for friends and family at any time of year!
- Half cup of water
- 14oz can sweet, condensed milk
- 15oz can cream of coconut
- 1/2 cups dark rum
- 30oz coconut milk (canned will be fine)
- Pinch of salt
- Half tsp ground cinnamon
- Optional ingredients include nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, star anise, cloves and lemon zest. Just figure out the recipe that gives the taste and kick you prefer!
How to make
Step 1. Just place all ingredients in a blender.
Step 2. Whizz up on high for a couple of moments until the mix is frothy and all ingredients fully combined.
Step 3. Pour coquito mix over ice and serve immediately. This rich and creamy coquito is ideally served in shot glasses at the end of any meal. A cinnamon stirrer or straw adds a little more flavour to the drink. The drink can be stored in the chiller for up to four months if kept in an airtight container. You’ll just need to shake it up a little to make it frothy again!
