Located on River Valley Road, The Tavern takes you far away from Singapore. Stepping into the small and cosy restaurant, one could easily imagine being in a neighbourhood restaurant in Italy. The Tavern was founded in 1994 and has since been a stronghold for Swiss and Continental cuisine in Singapore.
Filled with beautiful décor and atmospheric lighting, the restaurant is a wonderfully romantic hideout for special occasions. Using foodpanda finest, these special moments will now also come to you.
Rich Appetisers
Just after ordering our food, the Tavern offers a small starter. We each were given a small bun that was enriched with nuts. On the side came butter and a rich homemade pesto, which I could have just spooned by itself.
The menu of the Tavern is charmingly presented on a blackboard at your table. The highlights include fresh Irish oyster, raclette cheese with air-dried beef, Pan-fried Hokkaido scallops as well as baked avocado with Alaskan crab. During our The Tavern review, we decided on the baked Portobello mushroom and the goose liver terrine.
The former was not overcooked, but still very juicy and therefore extremely rich in taste. Topped with herbs and sea salt, the seasoning created an interesting contrast to the texture of the mushroom and made the natural flavour come forward. Beautifully presented, the dish was garnished with blanched champions and peppers as well as some homemade pesto.
Although the Portobello mushroom was already quite an excellent start to our meal, the goose liver terrine topped our dinner experience at the Tavern. The two pieces of goose-liver were still a little bloody but extremely tender. Cutting a piece, it would just melt on your tongue. Just this feeling alone is a worthy experience. The dish was served with some fresh greens, a vinegar-rich dressing and a few softly toasted and buttered pieces of white bread.
Explosive Mains
Even before our main meal was served, the Tavern offered us a complimentary in-between snack in the form of homemade raspberry sorbet. Although you might think that a dessert is better at the end of your dinner experience, the cooling sensation and fresh taste of it actually refreshed and reawakened our senses for what was still to come.
The mains at the Tavern include specialities, such as beef tenderloin Morel, angel hair pasta with half a lobster, fillet steak with goose liver as well as baked salmon Lindingo. Our shared choice was the Australian Wagyu beef. We only asked for 150g of it, as we truly believe in quality over quantity.
No matter what Wagyu beef you order, the friendly waiters will cut it right in front of you at the table. They even let you decide on the thickness of it. Although was asked for a thin medium rare slice, the beef was very tender and just cooked right, which is increasingly difficult the thinner the slice. Served on the side were carrots, beans, mushrooms, and a piece of potato bake. The finishing touch was the rich hollandaise sauce, which combined excellently with the overall heart feel of the meal.
Eating anything at the Tavern on River Valley Road will leave you in awe, truly satisfied, and long for more of the same tomorrow at the same time.
