If you grew up with a bunch of toys from a happy meal box, the idea of fast food is probably no stranger to you. After all, there is nothing better than indulging in a juicy beef burger and crispy golden fries after a long day at school or work!
Well it’s time to re-think the concept of fast food with Vegan Burg. As the name suggests, Vegan Burg is the earth’s answer to the golden “M”, serving up delicious burgers that come with healthy sides which are all 100% plant based, (mostly) gluten-free, Non-GMO and organic.
Situated in the quiet, discreet neighbourhood of Eunos, Vegan Burg is bustling –even on a weekday night –with customers eager to get their delicious green fix. The café itself is warm, inviting and evokes a sense of earthiness with wooden pallet tables, grass carpet seats and even a vintage bicycle at the entrance.
While the menu might scare the avid meat-eater, it will surely delight vegetarians and those who love a bit more crunch. For first time visitors, it helps that the burger joint has great and familiar flavour combinations like the Hawaiian Teriyaki, Mustang Relish and the Avocado Beetroot.
We had to try the creamy mushroom burger, which was as real as a burger could get –biting into the crispy, thick and chewy soy patty provided the same satisfaction as it would from a regular burger. Vegan Burg adds to the experience with heaps of button mushrooms, a delicious dairy-free sauce and organic ciabatta buns. What we really liked was the option to swap your fries for broccoli too!
Quick question: If the burger has no buns, is it still considered a burger?
We tried Vegan Burg’s most interesting invention, called the Cosmopaleo, which seems tailor made for anyone on a low-carb diet. You may think of it as a giant, nutrition-packed veggie sandwich, the Cosmopaleo as a whole was sweet and tangy, and packs some crunch from the lettuce, pineapple and broccoli. Interestingly, the soy patty used here isn’t savoury and had the chewy, rubbery texture of luncheon meat. Admittedly the serving for the Cosmopaleo was massive and we barely made it through the entire burger. Who says you can’t get full from eating your greens?
Besides burgers, Vegan Burg also serves sides like the Spinach Poppers (which were akin to Potato Croquettes) and Smoked Franks, which are sausages made from Tofu. You can even sip Organic Cola or Ginger Beer with your meal too!
For the first time in our lives, we didn’t step out of a fast food joint in a food coma. Instead we felt energised, light and happy –an affirmation that Vegan Burg could actually be a good substitute to the golden “M”.
In the words of Apple, all it takes is Courage.
