Whether after a long day or as a reward on a casual weekend, a nicely marinated roasted chicken never fails to impress. We went around the island, testing a few recommendations and giving you some new ideas where to fulfil your chicken cravings – all of which are of course available via foodpanda.sg.
1 The Chicken with Ambience
Located on Yio Chu Kang Road near Kovan MRT, Kombi Rocks is a little out of the way. However, the VW camper vans, the old school Ferrari, and the other vintage cars and motorcycles around the restaurant are worth the trip alone. The restaurant has been around for more than 40 years and has been featured in The Straits Times long before I was born. The ambience, including all the car-related memorabilia, is very cool, to say the least – but their food makes it even better.
As I was recommended to try their Red Wine Chicken Chops, my selection was clear. However, Kombi Rocks offers various platters, seafood dishes, and creative desserts. My dish came with a beautifully fried egg, a generous portion of fries, and some greens on the side. Marinated in a red wine sauce, the chicken seemed to be covered in a rich and shiny glaze, making it taste very juicy and a little crisp on the outside.
I can also recommend their signature Kombi Float Drink, which comes in various variations with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
2 The Allrounder
Having heard very good things about BBQ Chicken, we visited their outlet on Alexandra Road. Their rich menu includes Western favourites, such as Pasta Carbonara and Cheese Fondue Pizza, as well as various Korean and chicken dishes. Choosing the Cajun Chicken, the set came with a few sides – in my case with coleslaw, mushroom soup, extra BBQ sauce, and olive rice.
The chicken was crispy roasted and richly marinated, making it very juicy and tender in taste. The mushroom soup was very rich and creamy as well, including smaller bits of soft mushroom and croutons, which gave the soup a lot of texture. The olive rice was mixed with a few herbs and still steaming when it arrived at the table. The presentation of the dish was quite neat as well, making it a well-rounded dining experience.
3 Mediterranean Spice
Famous for their Peri-Peri Chicken, next on our roasted chicken tour was Nando’s. Their Afro-Portuguese inspired dishes are always exciting, while their restaurants are always full. Choosing any main dish at Nando’s, you can select the heat level of your dish, ranging from extra hot and hot to mild and lemon & herb taste. I went for the latter flavour for my ¼ chicken, including some garlic bread and spicy rice as sides.
The chicken had a lot of meat, was very tender, not dry at all, and marinated in a rich lemon sauce. The lemon taste actually made the chicken a little creamy, but not very heavy, which I felt was a very nice balance. The spicy rice on the side gave the overall taste of the dish a little more depth. I chose garlic bread simply because I love all kinds of bread, but I think that next time I will try their signature Peri chips, which I saw on other tables and they looked really good.
