No home is complete without a refrigerator and most of us have gotten used to putting most of our food stuffs, beauty products and what nots in there. Most things taste better or last longer in cooler temperatures but here are 7 common food items that should not be placed in the fridge!
1 Potatoes
This is one prime example of how some items do better in room temperature. Refrigeration adversely affects the flavor of pota. The best way is to store them in the pantry in paper bags (plastic bags trap moisture and speed decay). Most varieties should last three weeks.
2 Bread
My granny still insists that putting bread in the refrigerator keeps it fresh but if you like the taste of your bread, don’t! It will dry out fast really quickly and make it taste hard and stale. Instead, keep what you’ll eat within four days at room temperature and freeze the rest for future use.
3 Onions
This a tricky one. Cut onions should be placed in a resaleable bag or container and placed in the vegetable compartment of the fridge. But whole onions on the other hand, should not be stored in the fridge as it will turn moldy and mushy.
4 Coffee
The fridge causes condensation which will cause deterioration to the flavor of both grounded or whole coffee beans. Depending on what you store in the fridge, you could also be imparting unwanted flavors to your coffee. If you really want to get the best flavors from your coffee beans, store them in an airtight container (or a ziplock bag) in a cool dry environment, away from any strong smells.
5 Tomatos
Tomatoes are commonly found in the fridge in Singapore but they are really better off left in room temperature. Leaving them in the refrigerator will cause them to be dull and mealy. If you have some unripe tomatoes, you can put them in brown paper bags to speed the process.
