Undoubtedly one of the most popular cafes in Singapore, The Populus Coffee & Food Co. on Neil Road satisfies culinary demands with creative and fresh meals.
Having chosen an early Saturday morning for our Populus Café review, the café was already packed with an excited and hungry crowd at 10am. Although it was busy, our food came speedily and freshly made out of their kitchen. Waiting for our food, we noticed the beautiful and detailed decoration in the café, such as the creative conglomeration of lights on the ceiling, giving the café a touch of industrial feel and look.
The Populus Coffee & Food Co. | A Fresh Start into the Day
Offering a variety of fresh smoothies, we selected the Berryfruit option, which was intensely pink in colour and had a strong strawberry aftertaste. While special coffee requests are also accepted, all of their hot drinks come in beautiful and matt-surfaced crockery.
First up on the table was one of their special side dishes. Besides parmesan-topped truffle fries, the café also offers their healthy signature Populus Veggie Bowl. The crisp and fresh broccoli pieces were gently fried, maintaining a soft texture and giving them extra flavour. Mixed in were also fried garlic pieces that were already crispy, but still offered a very rich flavour.
The Populus Coffee & Food Co. | Creative Signature Surprises
Gazing around the other tables in the café, their Buckwheat Pancakes with berry fruit compote seemed a very popular choice. As I had opted for their signature version of scrambled eggs, I already thought to have made a conservative choice. However, The Populus Scramble had proven to be a wonderful and creative revamp of the common breakfast and brunch dish.
Signature soft scrambled eggs, a fresh herb melange, and marinated feta were all mixed in while cooking in the frying pan, giving the eggs a deep, rich, and creamy flavour and texture. All of it stuffed into a toasted croissant that was cut open lengthwise on the top. If that wasn’t already good enough, the scrambled eggs were topped with fried streaky bacon and a little bit of fresh green garnish.
Going through their menu was quite tricky, as my short list of dishes to order included actually every second item. Settling for their Superfood Platter, I was definitely very content with my choice. Long gone are the times when healthy was a synonym for boring, as this dish screams for repetition next Saturday.
The rich, crisp and garden-fresh mix included healthy kale, gently charred broccoli pieces, avocado stripes, spinach, a combination of cottage cheese and marinated feta, as well as an assortment of pumpkin seeds, dukkah, and grains.
At the bottom of it was a slice of multigrain bread, giving the dish a nicely grounding to chew on. Last but not least on the ingredient list was a sous vide egg on the side, which after poking became a creamy sauce for the entire dish. Offering a feast for the eyes, the creative and rich dishes at the Populus Café are not only visually attractive, but are also comforting and nutritious.
