A beef patty between two pieces of bread. A delightfully simple concept. Nevertheless, it represents one of the world’s most popular fast foods, the Hamburger. But why is this meal so popular? Perhaps the secret lies in the customisability of bread, filling and topping. Or the portability. Or because they are healthy and help you lose weight (ok, maybe not this last one). But all in all, it’s probably something to do with the the fact they taste amazing. There’s actually a scientific basis for this, the Maillard Reaction.
The specific inventor of the hamburger has, it seems, been lost to obscurity, although many competing claims exist. You would have thought that someone in the city of Hamburg, Germany knocked up the first, but shockingly (but perhaps, not surprisingly), it’s likely that a resident of the USA has the honours sometime in the late 19th century. Burgers are a serious business – whilst admittedly not being everyone’s idea of a perfect burger, McDonalds sells estimated 550 million Big Macs worldwide every year.

In recent years, the world has seen the rise of the gourmet burger, normally handmade from better quality beef, with a multitude of fancy toppings and artisan bread, washed down with craft beer (the hipster burger, if you will). Singapore boasts a plethora of options in this department – here we look at some of the best burgers in Singapore. After, make sure you take the quiz to find which burger suits you best.
Carl’s Jr.
Carl’s Jr. Restaurant | Source
This SoCal fast food chain opened its Singaporean-doors in 2005 and now features outlets in 4 locations around the island. What makes this burger place stand out? Carl’s Jr. is well known for its juicy, flame-grilled burgers served up in comfortable, atmospheric surroundings. There are lots of menu options from Chicken Burger and the vegetarian Portabello Mushroom to the fantastic Angus Beef Thickburger. Prices are a bit higher than the more industrial, quick turnover burger places elsewhere, but definitely worth it.
Veganburg

Who says burgers always have to be unhealthy? If you’re looking for a way to justify your daily burger, then Eunos’s Veganburg is a pretty safe bet. Your super healthy choices range from Avocado Beetroot (avocado and beetroot, along with onions, lettuce and tomato) to Smoky BBQ (mushrooms, BBQ sauce, onion rings and salad). It’s really as delicious as it sounds! And if you needed another reason, Veganburg’s promotional literature pushes their environmental credentials, namely the forsaking of polluting animal products in favour of environmentally friendly vegetables. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), livestock production accounts for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (the Worldwatch Institute’s figure of 51% that Veganburg features prominently on their website is not universally accepted). But anyway, enough with the facts, figures and statistics: have a burger, save the planet.
Tony Roma’s

Although first-and-foremost a rib restaurant, mafia-sounding-eatery Tony Roma’s menu also gives you a burger offer that you can’t refuse: the Roma burger. Made with ground sirloin, this juicy, charbroiled burger is available topped with cheese, mushrooms and bacon. A trio of halibut sliders can also be had if fish burgers are your thing.
Don’t come looking for any veggie burgers here, although that’s hardly surprising for this meat-obsessed restaurant chain advertising itself as ‘ribs-seafood-steaks’. Not the widest choice of burgers in Singapore, but excellent taste all the same.
